Periods 3 & 7 Grade 12
Word of the day:  euphonic

Students completed a quiz on Medieval Romance (Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Morte d'Arthur).  Tomorrow, students will bring in their thesis statements, outlines, and works cited pages to work on in class.  Remember:  the final draft of these pages is due on Monday, 12-19-2011.

Period 1 Grade 10


Read aloud from Unwind.  Quickly practiced using vocabulary in sentences.  Students also used their notes from Night to write a paragraph recalling events from Part 4.  Then, we began reading Part 5.


Period 4 & 6 Grade 10


Read aloud from Unwind.  Working with the Julia Alvarez poem.  In period 6, collected homework and re-read the Alvarez poem, working to find deeper meaning in its diction and structure.

Read aloud from Unwind. Reviewed new vocabulary (quiz on Friday). Finished section 4 in Night. HW: Study vocabulary for quiz

Period 3 grade 12

Had word quiz today. Explained how revised outline should look so as to circumvent the need for notecards. Reviewed for quiz tomorrow.

Period 7 grade 12
Had word quiz today. Explained how revised outline should look so as to circumvent the need for notecards. Students had many questions and asked if they could work on their revisions in class. So, tomorrow and Thursday will be set aside for this purpose. Also, distributed field trip forms.

Period 6 grade 10
Read aloud from Unwind. Took a look at the snow poem by Julia Alvarez, especially the diction and her punctuation. I gave students a list of several words for ice used to describe conditions in the Antarctic.
HW: Write a 10-15 line poem about cold, wintry weather using 5 of the words from the list.

Period 1 Grade 10

Read to page 197 in Unwind.  Collected homework (your crossword puzzles) and reviewed words.  Five new vocabulary words today:  dissent, eminent, exorcise, fabricate, irate.  We also read to page 61 in Night and added to our outline.

Period 4 Grade 10

Read to page 247 in Unwind.  Returned "found" poems.  Reviewed poetry terms.  Located these poetic devices in students' poetry.  HW:  Figures of speech worksheet.

Period 6 Grade 10

Read to page 259 in Unwind.  Returned students' poems and located poetic devices in their work.  Focused on metaphor writing.

Period 7 Grade 12

Word of the day:  lethargic (previous words include precipice, burnish, cantankerous, and exhaustive)
Reviewed for quiz on Wednesday.  Returned preliminary outlines and conferenced with students.

Distributed basic guidelines for MLA formatting of works cited page.  Reminded students of tomorrow's test on their outside reading books and preliminary thesis/outline/works cited due on Thursday.  Then we continued with Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.  I went over Sir Gawain's shield with its golden pentangle and what each of the five points represents.
