Periods 3 & 6 Today, we discussed Hamlet's second soliloquy (What argue and peasant slave am I!). On tap for tomorrow, reading the famous "To be or not to be" as a debate. For homework, read ActIII scene 1. Study for word of the day quiz.

Grade 12 CP. Word of the Day: egregious

Period 3 No class today. There will be a word of the day quiz on Thursday, 1-27-2011/must be familiar with words from fractious to egregious. On tap tomorrow, watch two film versions of Act II scene 2.

Period 6 There will be a word of the day quiz on Wednesday, 1-26-2011/must be familiar with words from fractious to egregious. for homework, read Act II scene 2. Remember your reading logs -- you should have 21 entries at this point.

English 12 CP WORD OF THE DAY:  inextricably

Period 3  Today, we read Act II scene i of Hamlet.  Then we watched the corresponding scenes from the movie.  Keep up with your writing journals -- at this time you should have 18 entries (3 for each scene).

Period 6  Today, we illustrated Hamlet's first soliloquy using the images Shakespeare provided.  For homework, read Act 1 scenes 4 & 5 and continue writing in your journals.

English 10 CP

Period 1  Vocabulary quiz today.  Began Night  by Elie Wiesel.

Period 4  Began Night by Elie Wiesel and wrote a response to a writing prompt.

Periods 1 & 4 Today, we worked on creating dialogs from the information learned from the diary excerpts. Typed dialogs are due on Thursday (for period 4) and Friday (for period 1). Period 4 had their vocal quiz today. Perd 1 will have theirs tomorrow, January 19th.

English 12 CP  WORD OF THE DAY:  1-14 amicable (words for 1-10 pristine/1-11 garrulous)

Period 3  Rough drafts of research papers have been collected -- HOORAY!!  Please do not expect them to be returned to you before 1-31-2011 at the earliest as they take time to correct.  You should have read Act I scenes 1, 2, and 3 in Hamlet.  You should also have 9 entries (3 for each scene) thus far in your reading logs.  Be sure to stay current with that.  On tap for Tuesday, 1-18-2011>>putting scene three into modern day language/improvisations.

Period 3  Outside reading assessment today.  On tap for tomorrow:  taking a closer look at Hamlet's first soliloquy and illustrating it with Shakespeare's imagery as inspiration.  Rough drafts of research paper due Friday, 1-14-2011.  DO NOT PROCRASTINATE -- WRITE A LITTLE EACH NIGHT!

Period 4  Today, collected final drafts of memoirs.  Read Eve Bunting's allegory, Terrible Things and discussed what it means to be a "bystander."  Due tomorrow>revisions of common tasks.

Period 3  Sonnets due today.  We began reading a narrative summary of the play Hamlet.

English 12 CP (Word of the Day:  fractious)
Period 6  Welcome back and Happy New Year, everyone!  I hope you are all well rested because there is much to be done in the next few weeks.
*For starters, tomorrow (1-4-11), there will be a quiz on the Renaissance, pastoral poetry, and carpe diem poems.
*Also, tomorrow, your sonnets in the style of Shakespeare's Sonnet #18 are due.
*On Wednesday, 1-5-11, there will be a vocabulary quiz; please know the words from precipice to prevaricate (the words in between are:  burnish, cantankerous, exhaustive, lethargic, decry, euphonic, troglodyte, redoubtable, extrapolate, and fractious).
*Friday, 1-7-11, there will be an assessment on your outside reading books -- 10 short-answer, basic questions about your books.

You should also be working on the rough draft of your research paper which is due Friday, 1-14-11.  Writing two or three paragraphs every night will surely lighten the burden of this arduous task.  DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE NIGHT BEFORE TO TRY TO WRITE 7 PAGES!

English 10 CP
Periods 1 and 4  Welcome back and Happy New Year, everyone!  Right now, both classes are working on writing memoirs in the style of Truman Capote.  Rough drafts are due this week for peer editing.  Please remember that this assignment is for your portfolio.

In addition, there are new vocabulary words.  Homework due tomorrow, Tuesday, 1-4-11>Using 8-10 vocabulary words, write a paragraph which includes all 5 of the verbs in this group of words.
