30 November 2010

English 10 CP
Period 1  Yesterday was back to reality after four restful days!  I assigned 10 new vocabulary words and read sentences using each one.  For homework, I asked that you write a paragraph using no fewer than 8 of the new words.  Then the class began work on the Common Task assessment which they finished today.

Period 4  Yesterday, I assigned 10 new vocabulary words and read sentences using each one.  For homework, I asked that you write a paragraph using no fewer than 8 of the new words.  Afterward, the class broke off into groups and began creating "Body Biographies" -- life size images of the main characters from Julius Caesar.  Today, the class began work on the Common Task assessment which they will finish tomorrow.

English 12 CP  WORD OF THE DAY:  CACOPHONY (11-30) and TACITURN (11-29)

Period 3  Today, the class spent time in the Library computer lab, searching for critical essays related to their research paper books. 

Homework (due Friday 12-3-2010) Write an analysis of a critical essay.  Also, do not forget the final drafts of your college essays due this week.

Period 6  NO CLASS TODAY  Remember to study for the quiz on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.  Also, read the excerpt from Morte d'Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory in your literature books.

23 November 2010

English 10 CP
Period 1  Today, I collected your Julius Caesar journals.  I also collected your vocabulary homework and reviewed the 20 vocabulary words you have defined in this set.  Tomorrow, there will be a quiz, so be sure to study your definitions.  We continued our reading of the play and are almost done with Act III.

Period 4  Today, the students had a vocabulary quiz on the words from "abridge" to "usurp".  We then continued our reading of the play and finished Act III.  Tomorrow, we do not have class, but next week we will be working on "common tasks" -- those mandatory writing assignments which should be incorporated into your portfolios.  This first task will be writing a response to poetry.  On Friday, 12-3-2010, there will be test on Acts II and III of Julius Caesar.

Period 3 NO CLASS TODAY

Period 6  You have been working rather hard these last few weeks, what with tests, quizzes, writing assignments, and college essays.  So, I thought you might enjoy a little comedy.  Today, we watched a bit of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, a spoof of King Arthur and his knights' quest for the holy grail.

DATES TO REMEMBER:  Monday, 11-29-2010>signed research paper contracts from parents are due!!  It is a test grade, so don't forget.

For those whom I may not see tomorrow, have a wonderful, bountiful Thanksgiving; remember to practice gratefulness for all you have!

English 10 CP
Period 1  Ten (10) new vocabulary words today.  For homework, create one alliterative phrase for each word--each phrase should have 3 or more words.  Tomorrow I will collect your Julius Caesar journals.  There should be 21 entries, 3 response for each of the 7 scenes we have read thus far.  We have read up to and including Act III scene 1.

Dates to remember:  Wednesday, 11-24-2010>vocabulary quiz; there will be an assessment on your outside reading book the week of 12-6-2010.

Period 4  Collected Julius Caesar reading journals today.  We read through Act III scene 2 and looked closely at Marc Antony's monologue to the people of Rome in which he praised his friend Julius Caesar and condemned the actions of Brutus and Cassius.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, 11-23-2010>vocabulary quiz on words from "abridge" to "usurp".

Period 3  Today, the research paper contract was distributed to students.  The first step you must hand in is the signed contract due Monday, 11-29-2010.  I have scheduled the class to meet in the library next week to begin your research.  We also had a quiz on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

English 10 CP
Period 1  Today, the students went to the library to check out books for their second quarter outside reading.  No class tomorrow.  Have a great week-end!

Period 4  Today, we continued our reading of Julius Caesar -- Act III Scene 1-- where Caesar is assassinated.  There are also 10 new vocabulary words.

Homework due tomorrow, Friday, 11-19-2010>define words in your notebooks and write one alliterative phrase for each word.

Don't forget:  the class will meet in the Library tomorrow for a book talk.

English 12 CP WORD OF THE DAY:  disparage

Period 3  Today, we continued our reading of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.  We discussed the symbolism of the pentangle on the back of his shield and the three tests he endured during his visit with Sir Bertilac.

Period 6  Students wrote their in-class essays on one of the Canterbury Tales that we read.  Tomorrow, there is a word quiz.  We will continue our reading of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

English 10 CP
Periods 1 and 4  I collected the vocabulary homework that was due today.  Then we continued our reading of Julius Caesar to Act III.  Tomorrow, period 1 students will go to the Library for a book talk and to check out a book for second quarter outside reading.  Period 4 students will go to the Library on Friday.  Don't forget to keep up with your reading logs.  We have read 7 scenes so far, so you should have 21 entries in your journals.  I'll be collecting them soon!

Period 3  Today, the students had a word quiz.  Then, we continued our reading of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and completed Part I.

English 10 CP  Today, the students performed the skits they prepared from Act I; afterwards, we continued reading Act II scene i of Julius Caesar.  Please be familiar with Brutus's soliloquy where he mulls over his decision to kill Caesar -- he compares Caesar's ambition (the ladder of success) to an adder (a poisonous snake).  This scene is also important for the power play between Cassius and Brutus.  Note the three times Brutus overrides Cassius's suggestions.

Homework due tomorrow, Wednesday, 11-17-2010>define 10 new vocabulary words and write two sentences for each word.

Period 4
English 10 CP  Today, the students took a test on Act I of Julius Caesar.

Today, the students completed an in-class essay writing on one of the Canterbury Tales.

Homework for tomorrow, Wednesday, 11-17-2010>study for the word quiz tomorrow; know words from placid to reprehensible.  Also, you need to decide soon on a title that you will be reading for your second quarter independent reading.

Period 6
English 12 CP  Today, the students continued reading Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and finished Part I.  We also had time to learn about Sir Gawain's shield and his preparations for his journey to the Green Chapel.

Homework for Thursday, 11-18-2010>Prepare your thoughts for the in-class essay writing.  Also, please decide on a title for your outside reading for the second quarter.

Period 1  NO CLASS TODAY.  For tomorrow, remember to study for your vocabulary quiz.  Also, a gentle reminder to keep up with your reading logs for Julius Caesar.  We will be beginning Act II scene 1 tomorrow.

Period 4  Today, we finished reading Act II scene 1 of Julius Caesar.  In groups of 2, the students reviewed the cast of characters -- the supporters and the conspirators.  Keep up with your reading logs.  At this point, you should have 12 entries (for the 4 scenes we have read thus far).  There will be a vocabulary quiz on Friday, 11-12-2010.

We began reading "The Wife of Bath's Tale".  It is considered an exemplum (or sermon).

This week is the final call for COLLEGE ESSAYS.  I will read/edit these rough drafts and return them to you for revision.  Afterwards, you may upload them to your portfolios.

I have not written since October 26th!  We've got some catching up to do...on Monday, 11-1-2010, we began reading The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by Wm. Shakespeare.  Students made journals to record their reading/writing responses.  The expectation is that you will respond to 3 writing prompts for each scene we read.  Even if you read a scene at home, you are responsible for keeping up with your writing logs.  This writing will count as a test grade for the 2nd quarter.


You also have 20 new vocabulary words for which you completed homework assignments.  There will be a quiz on Wednesday, 11-10-2010 (it is a C-day).


Homework due tomorrow, Friday, 11-5-2010>Read Act I scene ii and complete 3 writing prompts in your response logs.

Sorry for not having written since 10-26-2010.  So let's catch up...This week you had a "word of the day" quiz.  We finished "The Miller's Tale" and reviewed it as a literary work.  We start reading "The Wife of Bath's Tale" on Monday, 11-9-2010.  Tomorrow, period 6 drops.  Period 3 will read Mark Patinkin's article about what women really want.
